Help Us Change the Narrative

Your Voice Matters

Some politicians think a “property investor” is someone with a massive portfolio, playing the market like Monopoly, buying up houses while first-home buyers miss out.

Here’s who we really are: people who run a small business providing homes for others and security for themselves. Everyday folks, like your kid’s teacher saving for retirement. The nurse down the street. The young couple who bought a ‘fixer upper’, renovated, then rented it. Regular Kiwis who looked at the option of a rental business versus KiwiSaver and thought, “Yeah, I’ll back myself.”

There’s nothing sinister about it. We’re not speculators – we’re parents, savers, and planners, running a rental business and building a nest egg for later in life, same as anyone else.

The problem? There’s surprisingly little data to back up what we already know is true.

We Need to Tell Our Own Story

We know there are over 317,000 property investors in New Zealand, they own an average of 1.8 homes and most work other jobs. But beyond that? The picture gets fuzzy. When the picture’s fuzzy, other people fill in the blanks – usually with the wrong crayons.

As we head for the next election, NZPIF is launching our most comprehensive investor survey yet. This isn’t about collecting information for the sake of it. It’s about arming ourselves with facts so we can walk into conversations with politicians and media and say, “Let me show you who we really are.”

The Teacher

Two rentals to supplement retirement savings

The Nurse

Works shifts and manages one investment property

The Tradie

Built a small portfolio while working full-time

The Young Couple

Bought a fixer-upper, renovated, then rented it

Security, Not Speculation

Let’s be clear about something: property investors aren’t speculators chasing quick capital gains. We’re businesspeople. We provide homes. We’re building retirement security. We looked at the options – and we chose something familiar, that know we can make work: property.

Is that so different from others are doing? We’re just travelling a different way to the same destination: a comfortable retirement, a bit of financial breathing room, maybe helping the kids out one day.

The best bit is that our business is giving people somewhere nice to live. Sure, it’s hard work – no one loves that late night call when the hot water cylinder dies – but it’s rewarding. Not something you can say about other retirement savings.

What We’re Asking You to Do

We want to know about you: your age, background, profession, how many properties you own, why you got into it in the first place. All you have to do is complete our short survey.

Some questions are compulsory to help us get the insights we need, but you can skip any optional questions you’re not comfortable answering. As a thank you, you’ll go in the draw for one of three $100 Prezzy Cards.

All responses are anonymous unless you choose to enter the draw. If you add your name and email, those details will be visible to us but kept confidential.

We’re not trying to build a database of who’s who, we’re trying to build a picture of investors as people. If we can show politicians who investors really are, it might change how they treat us.

Why This Matters Right Now

Because the election is less than a year away. Because it’s a close race, and parties are already making policy that affects your livelihood. We need to be ready. We need facts. We need to be able to point to real data that shows who investors are and why we matter.

We’re not asking for special treatment. We’re just asking to be seen accurately and treated fairly.

Let’s Get This Right

Your participation in this survey matters. Your story – even if it feels ordinary to you – is part of the bigger picture we need to paint. Together, we can change the narrative from “wealthy speculators” to “everyday Kiwis building security for their families.”

That’s not whinging. That’s just the truth. And it’s about time someone put the data behind it.
